Symptoms

Common solar faults

  • Why is my solar inverter showing a fault light or error?

A fault light or error code means the inverter has picked up a problem, either on the panel side, the grid side or in the inverter itself. The code and the inverter’s logs are the starting point; tests on site then narrow it down.

  • What does an insulation (Riso) fault mean?

It means the inverter has measured low insulation resistance on the DC side, so somewhere in the panels or wiring is leaking to earth. Insulation resistance testing string by string shows where it is.

  • Why has my solar generation dropped?

A drop in generation can come from an inverter fault, a failed string or a damaged module, among other things. Comparing the generation data with string tests shows what is going on.

  • A panel is cracked or damaged.

Damaged modules need looking at. On a roof that is not safe to get on, a drone visual check confirms the damage first, and the repair is quoted as remedial work.

Inverter faults

What we do with inverter faults

We diagnose inverter faults: reading the error and the logs, testing the strings and checking the isolators and wiring around the inverter, to work out whether the problem is the inverter itself or something feeding it. Once we know, you get a plain-English explanation and a quote for the fix before anything is done.

FAQ

Common questions

How much does solar fault finding cost?

Solar fault finding costs £180 per half day for domestic systems and £650 per half day for commercial systems. Remedial work is quoted after diagnosis, and you approve the price before any repair starts.

Can you fix a system someone else installed?

Yes. We do not install new systems, so every system we work on was installed by someone else. We pick up existing systems when the original installer has gone or will not return.

Do you need to get on the roof every time?

Not always. Some faults are diagnosed from the inverter and generation data. If the roof is not safe, a drone visual check comes first.

What should I have ready when I call?

Inverter make if known, your town, and what is wrong — fault light, dropped generation, or damaged modules.

Do you sell or install new solar?

No. We do not sell or install new systems. We service, diagnose and repair systems already installed, and offer independent snagging on someone else’s new install.

Do you cover my area?

Yes. We cover Worcestershire, including Worcester, Droitwich Spa, Bromsgrove, Kidderminster, Stourport-on-Severn, Malvern, Evesham, Pershore, Redditch, Upton-upon-Severn and Tenbury Wells.

When do I get my report?

Domestic customers pay on completion. Commercial and working farm customers pay within 14 days of the invoice date. Utility-scale customers pay on the terms in the quote or purchase order, within 30 days. Your written report is sent once the invoice is paid in full. If you raise a genuine problem with our work, we will not hold back the report over the amount in dispute. If we find anything unsafe, we tell you straight away on the day and make it safe where we can, whatever the payment situation. See our terms.
